AYSE GUL ALTINAY’S SEMINAR

aa

In the past few days, I attended Subject-Based Discussion: “Toplumsal Cinsiyet ve Hafıza: Zabel Yesayan’dan Sevgi Soysal’a Hatırladıklarımız & Unuttuklarımız” by Ayşe Gül Altınay. Firstly, we brainstormed about the place of women in society: When they first  studied at a university , women’s movement in Ottoman Empire, first  political party that was founded  by women etc. Especially, Altınay emphasise that the process of gaining women’s rights is shown like women’s rights were given to them without women’s demand but just the contrary,  they have been struggling to gain their rights since 1910 and women’s rights were gained by women.

Altınay read some quotations from Zabel Yesayan’s -First Ottoman-Armenian socialist-feminist pacifist female writer- and Sevgi Soysal’s writings. In this way, she highlighted women’s problems and their perspective.

There are some recomeneded books about women and their movements by Altınay:

Bir Adalet Feryadı Osmanlı’dan Türkiye’ye Beş Ermeni Feminist Yazar / Aras Yayıncılık
